Vecmēmele Manor
The most unusual family story at this manor has survived not in an album, but on the door of a safe.
Vecmēmele Manor is mentioned in documents as early as 1516. The manor house seen today was built in the second quarter of the 19th century and later rebuilt. In 1858 the estate was acquired by the Hāren family, and several generations of the family grew up here.
An unusual safe room remains in the manor library: from the room, its entrance looks like a wooden wall cupboard, behind which there is a metal door. The wooden door still bears the height marks of Hāren family children, the earliest readable one dating from 1885 and the latest from 1909.
The current owners are gradually restoring the former barons’ property on the picturesque bank of the Mēmele River as a visitor destination and cultural space. Private property. Guided tours by prior arrangement.
