Learning Trip to a Point of the Struve Geodetic Arc

On Friday, 11 September, Year 8 and 9 pupils went on a learning trip to the “Bristen” point of the Struve Geodetic Arc in Sece parish.

In the beautifully maintained area, they were welcomed by surveyors who showed how modern surveying instruments work. Pupils were able to try using a global positioning device and a total station, learning how exact coordinates are determined and angles for maps are measured. They also learned many interesting facts about Carl Friedrich Tenner’s work at this point and about the length of the Struve Geodetic Arc. Alongside the practical work, they completed worksheets related to the activities.

After their active outdoor learning, everyone was treated to warm and very tasty solyanka soup.
