Kankaļi Roman Catholic Church

To find this small wooden church, you need to leave the usual tourist routes—and that is part of its special character.

A small wooden cemetery chapel was built in the Kankaļi cemetery. After the First World War it was restored and enlarged, and on 24 June 1923 it was consecrated as the Church of St John the Baptist. It is a wooden architecture monument of European significance.

In recent years the church has entered a new phase of restoration: the interior and surroundings have been improved, the roof replaced, and the restored church tower was opened in 2024.
